Togolese nationals are planning series of streets protests this week as they revive their campaign to get their President, Faure Gnassingbe out of power.
The campaign to get President Gnassingbe out of power has been ongoing for months and is led by opposition political parties and civil society groups.
The Togolese President took over from his father Eyadema 12 years ago after he died while in power for 38 years and has since won elections in 2005, 2010 and 2015.
Gnassingbe got the two-term limit for the Togo presidency scrapped a year ago to allow him to further prolong his rule.
The government has called for a referendum on the introduction of the two-term limit but there are fears it would further prolong the presidency of Gnassingbe until 2030 since he will have the chance to run again, an idea his critics do not support.
There has been little effort from the African Union or ECOWAS to resolve the political crisis in Togo. The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo Addo has held some meetings with Togo’s 14 opposition political parties in an attempt to address the crisis but there hasnt been any progress.
There are plans by the opposition and other activists to hold protests from Wednesday to Friday as part of efforts to re-mobilize and put pressure on Gnassingbe to step down.
Previous protests have been met by a major government crackdown leading to some arrests and deaths, with some Togolese feeling to neighbouring Ghana although some have since returned.
