Officials in Kenya have confirmed the death of at least three people after a five-storey building collapsed on them in the country capital Nairobi in the early hours of Sunday.
Several other people had been feared trapped in the rubble but some were rescued and sent to the hospital for medical treatment.
Officials could not confirmed the cause of the disaster but building collapse is very common in Kenya. Officials say that is due to the lack of permit for such structures to be put up in the first place.
As many as 30,000 to 40,000 buildings are said to be built without approval in Nairobi are also at risk of collapsing according to city authorities.
The head of the police department’s disaster management, Pius Maasai has said that residents in such unapproved structures must vacate those buildings for their own safety.
“(A) decision has been made that some of them will be knocked down straight away,” he said.
There are signals rescue operations might be brought to an end with the Mathare County’s Deputy Commissioner Patrick Mwangi telling reporters on Sunday that “The operation is almost concluding and we hope that no one else is trapped or hurt in this tragedy.”
