The President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa on Sunday travelled to South Africa for “medical checks”, according to local media report.
New Zimbabwe.com reports that Mnangagwa’s trip is related to regular treatment he requires following reports of his alleged poisoning last year before he became President.
A government source told the local media that Mnangagwa’s health was “not in danger”.
The source was quoted as saying that the Zimbabwean leader “will back in the country on Monday”.
“After the poisoning last year, his doctors advised he should continue to be checked regularly until he is in the clear. It’s not that he is in any danger but they want to continue checking for traces of the poison,” the source said.
Mnangagwa since becoming president has struggled to deal with the country’s ailing economy although he has made attempts to re-establish relations with foreign donors from whom he is seeking support.
He took over from former mentor and long-time leader, Robert Mugabe after a military takeover forced him to resign last year.
The new Zimbabwean leader had promised to fight corruption and restore freedom of expression within the country as he hopes to fix the country’s economic woes.
Mnangagwa has however this year faced allegations of spending at least $2.3m on his recent trip to China.
He has also called for an end to the sanctions impose on his country which has virtually crippled its economy.
