The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa is to donate half of his salary to charity work to honour the late Nelson Mandela who was the country’s first black president.
Ramaphosa earns $290,000 in salary annually and hopes half of that when donated to charity this year will help fund an initiative called Thuma mina (Send me).
The fund will be launched on July 18 which is supposed to be President Mandela’s 100th birthday later this year.
The charity is to be managed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation “In memory of Madiba” Ramaphosa said on Wednesday in parliament.
He added that the fund is “in recognition of the great sacrifices he made and his tireless commitment to improving the lives of the most vulnerable, there is something that many of us can do”
The President said “We are looking for people with skills, time and commitment to ‘lend a hand’ to these community-based projects through mentoring, training and capacity building.
In this way, we aim to provide South Africans with a tangible opportunity, with a significant impact, to be an integral part of the fight against poverty”.
Mr Ramaphosa who took over from Jacob Zuma last year is a billionaire whose wealth is from mining work in the mining industry where he has been a union leader.
