The South African gold miner AngloGold Ashanti has announced that it will be cutting some 2,000 jobs at its domestic operations.
The company said on Wednesday in a statement that “The restructuring will affect employees across the different categories and levels”.
In 2017 AngloGold Ashanti said it was considering laying off some 30 percent of its workforce as part of its restructuring program.
The company which is Africa’s biggest gold miner employs 28,000 people, but said the lay-offs would help to improve production and the cost base of its South African business.
Anglogold this year joined other big mining companies to announce a compensation deal of $400m that covers Thousands of South African miners who are suffering from lung diseases.
The mining companies agreed to make the pay-out following the contraction of silicosis by these miners which is an incurable lung disease.
