State media in Burkina Faso has reported that security forces have killed three suspected terrorists on Tuesday following a special operation on the outskirts of the capital Ouagadougou.

The state television reported that one person has also been arrested while five people, including one civilian, were injured in fighting in the Rayongo neighbourhood.

A BBC reporter said the shootout between the terrorists and security forces lasted over seven hours.

Police officers were called to a building after reports of “suspicious activities” with the chief prosecutor inspecting the house after the shootout.

Burkina Faso has been on high alert following several attacks by Islamist militants over the last two years.

Last year 18 people were killed during an attack on a restaurant in the capital Ouagadougou. Gunmen opened fire on customers who were seated outside the restaurant.

8 other persons sustained injuries in what officials called “terrorist attack”.

Three of the attackers were killed by security forces, according to the country’s communication Minister Remis Dandjinou.
