The military in Nigeria has said that over 1,000 people held hostage by Islamist militant group Boko Haram in the northeast of the country have been rescued.
The Nigerian army in a statement said on Monday that hostages rescued were mainly women and children although. Some young men forced to fight for the group were also rescued.
The statement claimed that soldiers rescued the hostages from Malamkari, Amchaka, Walasa and Gora villages of Bama Local Government Area in the northeastern state of Borno.
The rescue operation was carried out with the support of troops from other West African countries who make up the Multinational Joint Task Force.
Nigeria’s government has struggled to contain the insurgency of the militant group and had to negotiate recently for the release of some young school girls abducted by the militants in Yobe state.
Boko Haram’s activities since 2009 have led to many deaths and displacing millions.
