Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari is seeking re-election in 2019 despite facing major challenges in his country and criticisms about his performance.
The 75 year old leader is also struggling to deal with his country’s economic crisis as millions remain jobless, coupled with the failure to contain ethnic clashes and the insurgency of militant group Boko Haram.
But after announcing his intention to seek re-election against all odds, President Buhari has been providing reasons why he decided to seek a second term in office.
On Saturday he told party supporters in Katsina State that he is “not in politics for fun, frivolity or to amass wealth. I have always been driven by a deep sense of commitment to make a difference in the lives of our people.”
President Buhari has contested for president in 2003, 2007 and 2011 but only became successful and 2015.
“After my retirement from the army, or forceful retirement, I sat back and watched as events unfolded on the political turf, and realised the country needed an intervention for fairness, justice, and the inclusion of Nigerians in the issues that affect their lives,” President Buhari said.
The Nigerian leader is still hopeful he holds the key to transforming Nigeria from its current state.
Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo has already spoken against Buhari’s decision to seek re-election claiming Buhari’s government has failed to perform.
