The former President of Malawi Joyce Banda on Saturday returned home after fleeing the country into self imposed exile for four years.
As the country’s first female president, she fled the country in 2014 at the end of her tenure in the wake of a financial scandal. She has since lived in South Africa, UK and the USA.
The former Malawian president was then accused of abuse of office and money laundering, claims she denied.
Despite facing the threat of possible arrest over these allegations, Banda returned home at Blantyre’s airport on a flight from Johannesburg.
She was greeted by hundreds of supporters of her People’s Party.
Joyce Banda is hoping to rebuild the party ahead of general elections in 2019 after losing the presidential elections to Peter Mutharika, after serving for two years.
