Police officials in Ghana have confirmed the arrest of two social welfare workers who allegedly sold a day-old baby to a couple struggling to have children.
The suspects who are now being investigated further by the police reportedly sold the baby for $3,600 (Gh 16,500).
Police gave details about the suspects as Evelyn Alangea 41, a probation officer at the department of the social welfare and Samuel Obeng Afriyie 58, a justice administration officer, both work in the same department.
They had faked the death of the baby to enable them sell the infant to the best bidder.
Spokeswoman for the police in Ghana’s Ashanti region Juliana Obeng told reporters that mother of the baby complained that after giving birth in the hospital, the suspects took the new-born to another hospital claiming to be treating rashes on her body.
The suspects according to the police said the social workers returned with news of the baby’s death. They sold the baby in February this year and subsequently shared the money among themselves.
The suspects who have been granted bail are now facing charges of stealing a child and conspiracy to steal a child.
