Students in a University in Mozambique are reported to have been initiated with urine and faeces as part of rituals for new undergraduates.
Pictures have emerged on social media showing how these students are subjected to initiation ceremony by being coerced to drink and bath urine and faeces.
Local media has reported of anger among citizens following the revelation at the Unizambeze’s agriculture, forestry and engineering faculty.
Some of the first-year students are said to have been made to shave their heads and made to undergo bizarre activities as part of the initiation.
A victim Artemiza Nhantumbo, told local TV channel STV, “The initiators cut our hair. It was horrific. It was unbearable. They forced human urine and faeces into our mouths. We were bathed with urine and they rubbed our noses with faeces.”
One other student Quiteria Jorge was also quoted as saying that “They removed our hair because, for them, it was too long. But, we could do nothing. I cried and cried until I got home.”
A senior education official in Mozambique, Cardoso Miguel, has disclosed that the incident being investigated.
“The inquiry committee will assess the degree of involvement of each student – some will probably be suspended, and others may be expelled.”
Initiation ceremonies for new undergraduates happen in various universities across Africa although they are not official.
