The United Nations children’s agency UNICEF has said that more than one thousand children have been abducted by the militant group Boko Haram in the north-eastern part of Nigeria since 2013.

The agency said on Friday that the activities of the militant group has sent shock waves among many Nigerians creating fear among young people.

Nigeria’s UNICEF chief, Malick Fall said “Children in northeastern Nigeria continue to come under attack at a shocking scale”.

UNICEF said it has been able to document the number of children who have been abducted and verified those cases, with the figure reaching over 1,000.

More than 2,000 teachers have also been claimed by UNICEF to have been killed and more than 1,400 schools destroyed due to the operations of Boko Haram.

This year, Boko Haram abducted more than 100 school girls from Yobe state but government of Nigeria negotiated for their release.

276 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok were also abducted four years ago, an incident that attracted global outrage.

Millions have been displaced due to the activities of Boko Haram with thousands also dead in several attacks carried out by the group since 2009.
