The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari on Friday announced his intention to seek re-election in the 2019 presidential election.

The President’s personal assistant, on New Media Engagement, Bashir Ahmad on twitter wrote that his boss “President Muhammadu Buhari has just officially announced his intention to seek re-election in 2019.”

Ahmad said further details would be given soon as he puts an end to speculations about the ambition of his boss to run again for office next year.

The twitter account of the Nigerian presidency later also announced the president’s intention confirming the earlier claim of Bashir Ahmad by saying that Buhari “announced his intention to seek the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and contest for a second term of Office in the 2019 elections.”

Mr Buhari is currently visiting the UK ahead of a meeting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government on 16 April.

Last month Buhari received the backing of his party’s national executive committee to seek re-election.

The party is however expected to still conduct a presidential primary to give other potential candidates a fair playing field.

Meanwhile former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has asked President Buhari to quit as he questions his competence to rule Nigeria beyond his current tenure.

Obasanjo has described Buhari as a failure and predicted that it would be disastrous for him to think about seeking re-election.

Buhari who is 75 years has for the larger part of his presidency been plagued by reports of ill-health forcing him out of the country on some occasions to seek medical attention.
