The President of Liberia, George Weah on Friday visited Ghana, a country that hosted thousands of Liberian refugees for years during Liberia’s civil wars.
Mr. Weah who occasionally lived in Ghana during his footballing career was visiting Ghana for the first time since becoming President.
He thanked the people of Ghana for creating a home for many Liberians during the civil war and promised to ensure that the relation between the two countries is strengthened.
Thousands of Liberians were killed in two separate civil wars that lasted more than ten years. Ghana opened a camp in the central part of the country to provide refuge for those who fled the war.
Although majority of the Liberians have been repatriated, some inter-married with Ghanaians and have families, making Ghana their home country.
George Weah took over from Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf in January this year after winning the presidential election in 2017, defeating the incumbent government.
Liberia’s economy was devastated by a deadly Ebola epidemic in 2013-2015 following years of civil wars.
George Weah has pleaded with the Ghanaian President to support his country rebuild after years of economic challenges.
Ghana’s President Nana Akufo Addo described Weah election victory a symbol of how far Liberia has come after years of civil war and the Ebola outbreak.
Both leaders held bilateral talks in the capital Accra hoping to establish effective economic partnership for mutual benefits.
Liberia was Founded 170 years ago by freed slaves.
