Egypt’s President, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi has been declared winner of the country’s presidential elections after winning more than 90% of votes counted so far, according to Egyptian state media.
Mr. al-Sisi’s victory was well expected even before voting started after key opponents dropped out of the race.
Egypt’s President was challenged only by one candidate in the person of Moussa Mustafa Moussa who however supports al-Sisi.
State media has reported that more than 23 million people voted in the election after three days of voting in which 60 million people had registered to vote.
Sisi, 63, led the military to overthrow Egypt’s first democratically elected President Mohamed Mursi in 2013. He was subsequently voted president and he now seeks to continue in that role for another four years.
Egypt, with a population of 95 million, is the largest Arab country and supporters of al-Sisi say he has brought stability to the country after the revolution and his victory is a verdict on his presidency so far.
