A senior official who works with Gambia’s intelligence agency has been arrested by the police as investigations continue into the death of the political activist Solo Sandeng who was killed in April 2016.
The police made the announcement of the arrest on Monday years after persistent calls for proper investigation into Sandeng’s death.
The late political activist was killed in custody under the former and now exiled leader Yahya Jammeh.
The spokesperson for the Gambian Police Superintendent David Kujabie said the suspect James Mendy was “in police custody and is being investigated in connection with the murder of Solo Sandeng”.
The AFP also quoted a security source who said Mendy was “one of the senior staff of the agency implicated in the murder”.
Several former security agency officials are currently facing trial over Sandeng’s death as the current government hopes to bring an end to many mysterious killings and disappearances that occurred under Yahya Jammeh.
Yahya Jammeh was forced out of power after his electoral defeat to current President Adama Barrow in the 2016 elections. Jammeh ruled for over 20 years until his exit.
