23 people have been reported dead after a vehicle run into a crowd attending a party in the capital of Mozambique, Maputo on Sunday.
Local media reported that the vehicle was traveling at high speed when it hit the crowd as officials begin investigating the incident.
The driver, according to some locals was drunk, losing control of the vehicle as he attempted to speed through a traffic police checkpoint.
Police officials said the driver of the vehicle had ignored a police order to stop just before hitting the party-goers beside a pedestrian bridge on a main road.
Over 30 people were injured. Police said the driver was among the dead.
The country’s President Filipe Nyusi has expressed his condolences to the bereaved families.
