Some 112 political parties are reported to have registered to participate in the upcoming general elections in Zimbabwe.
This number is likely to increase as interest in the elections continues to surge, according to local media.
But the president of the country, Emmerson Mnangagwa is reported to be shocked by the high number of parties registering with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).
He has questioned the authenticity of the number according to NewsDay, with Mnangagwa saying he would soon “order an investigation to find if the political parties were genuine”.
In October last year only 75 political parties were said to have registered and ready to contest the 2018 elections, according to New Zimbabwe.com.
This year’s elections would be the first in a post-Mugabe era after the 94 year old former leader was forced to resign from power after a military takeover.
Mnangagwa has promised to ensure that the elections are held in a free and fair manner as he struggles to convince the West about a new dawn in Zimbabwe under his leadership.
