The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday defended his administration’s response and handling of the abduction of over 100 school girls from Dapchi in Yobe state.
The girls were kidnapped from the Government Girls’ Science and Technical College on February 19 by Boko Haram militants.
The Buhari government has been criticized for how it has handled the issue and its response to getting the girls rescued.
But President Buhari has said that his government’s response is better than the response of the previous administration under former president Goodluck Jonathan to the abduction of some Chibok girls in Borno State.
Buhari at a meeting with some traditional and community leaders in Damaturu, Yobe State, said “The Federal Government’s response to the unfortunate abduction of the school girls is a clear departure from the insensitivity of the past administration which looked the other way while the Chibok girls were taken away in 2014 and held in captivity for over three years.”
“Due to our commitment, over 100 Chibok girls have been rescued and reunited with their families, sent back to school and empowered with requisite skills,” he added.
Buhari further said that “We, therefore, have no doubt that the Dapchi girls will be rescued or released. I can reassure parents, Nigerians and the International Community that we will do all that is within our power to make sure that the girls are brought back safely to their families.”
The presidency of Nigeria has already announced that it will be negotiating for the release of the 110 girls abducted from Dapchi.
A human rights activist, Aisha Wakil who is popularly called Mama Boko Haram told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) this month that the abducted schoolgirls are safe with someone she calls Habib, whom she called her son, and his friends.
Boko Haram abduction of school girls from Chibok received worldwide condemnation and campaigns for their release. Some of the over 200 Chibok girls kidnapped have been release and rescued.
