The anti-graft agency of Zimbabwe has said that the country’s former first lady, Grace Mugabe would not be facing any arrest over a controversial PhD she acquired from the University of Zimbabwe.
New Zimbabwe.com reported that the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Committee (Zacc) chairperson, Gordon Nguni said that Mrs. Mugabe may have been what he calls an “innocent beneficiary of a fraudulent academic degree”.
Grace Mugabe received the doctorate degree in 2014 amid claims that she did not study for it during a time when her husband former President Robert Mugabe was chancellor of the University.
Nguni said was quoted as saying that “There is no evidence to probe Grace. Grace is not a University of Zimbabwe official. She does not know the rules of how people are granted PhDs.
“We are investigating those people who knew the regulations and who fraudulently did whatever they did… we are probing those university authorities who violated university regulations,” Nguni was quoted as saying further.
Zimbabwean anti-corruption investigators said last week arrested some staff of the University of Zimbabwe as part of investigations into the PhD awarded to Mrs. Mugabe.
Levi Nyagura, the vice chancellor of the University of Zimbabwe who has been arrested will be charged with abuse of office.
Grace Mugabe’s desire to succeed her 94-year-old husband forced the army to takeover leading to the exit of Robert Mugabe in November last year.
A copy of the 226-page doctoral thesis, titled “The Changing Social Structure and Functions of the Family” was only published last month following public calls for Grace to be stripped of her PhD.
