Police officers in South Africa have raided the home of the powerful Gupta family in a crackdown on the activities of the business friends of President Jacob Zuma.

The raid which was carried out on Wednesday is part of a probe into allegations the three brothers had corrupt links with Mr. Zuma, who has now been recalled by his ruling party, the ANC as head of state.

Local media reported that two members of the Gupta family were arrested and could appear in court on Wednesday which the government likely to oppose their bail request.

Last year there were reports the controversial business family was being investigated by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigations over possible U.S links.

The Financial Times reported then that the FBI opened an investigation into U.S. links to the Guptas, an action seen to be a further escalating of the scandal that has gripped the business family.

The Guptas are business friends of South Africa’s President, Jacob Zuma and have been accused of securing government contracts due to their relationship with Mr. Zuma.

The ANC on Tuesday decided to recall President Jacob Zuma and sack him as head of state after hours of meetings and negotiations.

ANC’s Secretary-General Ace Magashule at a news conference on Tuesday said that a delegation had visited Mr Zuma and asked him to step down.

“The president… agreed in principle to resign under a proposed timeframe extending from three to six months,” Mr Magashule said.

“South Africa is going through a period of uncertainty and anxiety,” Mr Magashule added and “The [National Executive Committee] firmly believes the situation requires us to act firmly.”
