The Nigerian state of Lagos has announced the setting up of special courts that will deal solely with sexual offences and corruption cases.
The Lagos State Government on Thursday inaugurated the four special courts with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reporting that two courts will adjudicate on special offences (economic and financial crimes), while the two others will handle sexual offences.
The setting up of Sexual Offences Court is the first of its kind in Africa’s most populous nation.
The governor of the Lagos state Akinwunmi Ambode, said he was “particularly glad about the designation of two courts to handle sexual related offences as it complements our fight against sexual abuse.
“These sexual offences courts will have trained and experienced prosecutors to interact with survivors, provide support and ensure timely prosecution of the cases,” Ambode said.
Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari has promised to deal with corruption in the country and has since becoming president taken several initiatives to fight the canker.
The latest move by the Lagos State would significantly complement the fight as cases of corruption and domestic abuses continue to increase according to officials.
