Officials in Ghana have confirmed the discovery of the mineral, Lithium in large quantities which can now be processed commercially.
The discovery of this mineral is a new addition to the portfolio of minerals the West African nation has discovered and currently processes.
Citi FM in Accra has reported that Chief Executive of Ghana’s minerals Commission, Kwaku Addai Antwi-Boasiako disclosed that the mineral was identified during a nationwide exploration exercise.
The local media outlet quoted the Antwi-Boasiako as saying that “The mining activities will start but we want to attract investments”.
Currently the mineral has been identified in the country’s Volta Region and the Ghanaian official said “Lithium and all these rare minerals….are the minerals of the future.”
The government has said it wants to protect the area where this discovery took place to prevent encroachment and illegal mining.
Lithium is used for the manufacture of batteries, heat-resistant glass, ceramics, among other uses.
Ghana is rich in gold, bauxite and other natural mineral resources.
