There has been outrage from Africans over US President Donald Trump’s remarks referring to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as “shithole countries”.

On Thursday Donald Trump in an outburst about immigrants from these countries in the White House. “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Mr Trump said to lawmakers on Thursday, according to the Washington Post.

President Trump before coming into office promised to deal with immigration and was holding series of meetings to agree on an immigration deal.

The Trump administration is trying to limit the number of family members of immigrants who enter the US. The administration also wants to end the protected status of thousands of immigrants already in the US.

The Washington Post further quoted Donald Trump to have said “Why do we need more Haitians? Take them out.”

African politicians have responded angrily to Mr. Trump describing him as a racist although Mr. Trump denied on Friday using such derogatory words.

President of Senegal Macky Sall he was “shocked by the words of President Trump on Haiti and Africa. I reject them and condemn them vigorously. Africa and the black race deserves the respect and consideration of all.”

Jessie Duarte, the deputy secretary general of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress told a news conference in East London that “Ours is not a shithole country and neither is Haiti or any other country in distress.”

Duarte also said “We would not deign to make comments as derogatory as that about any country that has any kind of socio-economic or other difficulties,”

Botswana’s foreign ministry also called Trump’s comments “highly irresponsible, reprehensible and racist.”

There have been global condemnation to Trump’s latest comment.
