Imports from Zambia into Namibia have been banned following a major cholera outbreak in that country.
The Namibian government has said that importation of all perishable food, fish, fruits, unprocessed food and water from its neighbouring country Zambia would be halted for now due to the cholera outbreak.
Reuters reported that the ban would only be lifted when the outbreak is contained after more than 60 people were reported to have died in Zambia from the outbreak.
Zambia is one of Namibia’s key trading partners exporting over $322 million worth of items to Namibia in 2016.
The Zambian government has already banned street vending and public gatherings to contain the spread of the disease which has killed 67 people since September last year. Most of the deaths were recorded in Lusaka.
Zambia has already declared curfew in a parts of the Lusaka township badly affected by the outbreak.
Meanwhile the Zambian government on Wednesday started vaccinations against cholera. Two million people have been targeted in this vaccination exercise.
