Zambians wishing to secure passports in the country’s capital Lusaka cannot do so after the government shutdown the passport offices there.
The move is part of latest measures to deal with the outbreak of Cholera which is fast spreading across the country.
The government has already banned street vending and public gatherings to contain the spread of the disease which has killed 67 people since September last year. Most of the deaths were recorded in Lusaka.
The home affairs minister of Zambia, Stephen Kampyongo has said that the Passports and Citizenship Office in Lusaka would remain closed until further notice.
“In the meantime officers will only attend to travel emergencies. This is to allow for measures to be put in place to avoid the spread of cholera,” Kampyongo said.
Zambia has already declared curfew in a parts of the Lusaka township badly affected by the outbreak.
Meanwhile the Zambian government on Wednesday started vaccinations against cholera. Two million people have been targeted in this vaccination exercise.
