Former army chief Constantino Chiwenga and Minister of Defence, State Security and War Veterans Kembo Mohadi have been sworn in as deputy presidents of Zimbabwe.
President of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa named the two as his deputies last week and had that nomination endorsed by his party, Zanu PF this week.
General Constantino Chiwenga, 61 who is first vice president and his other colleague, Mohadi took the oath of office on Thursday in Harare.
They pledged to be “faithful” to Zimbabwe “obey, uphold and defend the constitution”.
“I will discharge my duties with all my strength and to the best of my knowledge and ability,” the two deputy presidents said in taking their oath.
The Zanu PF removed Robert Mugabe from the position of president of the party, an action that put pressure on the former president to resign after a military takeover.
Chiwenga led that military takeover to back Mnangagwa who had then been sacked as vice president of the country.
Mnangagwa was then appointed as Zanu PF leader and approved as Mugabe’s replacement in the party and also as the country’s President.
Kembo Mohadi, a veteran politician has been serving as state security minister for years. He will serve as second vice president.
