2017 has been a remarkable year with interesting happenings taking place in Africa. From politics, entertainment to sports across the continent, the Africa Feeds News team brings you highlights of some of the interesting news items published.
JANUARY
In January this year Morocco which for years left the African Union was re-admitted into the union after lobbying and securing enough votes from member states.

The African Union also elected a new commission chief in the person of Moussa Faki Mahamat from Chad following the exit of Dlamini-Zuma.

The year 2017 was also remarkable because of the exit of Gambia’s former leader, Yahya Jammeh who had refused to exit power after losing an election to current president, Adama Barrow. Jammeh initially conceded defeat to the surprise of the whole world and then made a U turn. ECOWAS leaders had to negotiate his exit.

In Zambia the police command banned marriage between Zambian police officers and foreigners. The police command claimed foreign partners could be spies for other countries and compromise security of Zambia.

In the West African nation of Ghana, the country’s new president, Nana Akufo Addo was caught plagiarising speeches of past presidents of the USA and that attracted huge criticisms especially since that was his inaugural speech to the country.

FEBRUARY
The South African Supreme Court also ruled that the country’s notice to leave the International Criminal Court was invalid. South Africa like many African countries claim the ICC is unfair towards African leaders.

The former president of Zimbabwe prior to his exit from Power was destine to win elections in his country even should he die. His wife Grace Mugabe claimed even her husband’s corpse would be filed for election.

Ghana’s new government then claimed over 200 cars were missing and could not account for them shortly after coming into power.

Gambia’s new president, Adama Barrow after coming into office announced that earlier plans by the former leader, Yahya Jammeh to get Gambia to exit the ICC had been suspended.

Robert Mugabe got for his 93rd birthday 150 cattle from a donation called for by the Zanu PF.

MARCH
Ghana made a lot of headlines as well in March when Members of parliament in the country clashed over allegations thag some of them took money to approve the president’s nominations for cabinet positions.

The President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma also sacked his finance minister after several oppositions for him not to do so. It triggered attempts to impeach him which failed.

The police in Malawi also clashed with Angry Parents over Witchcraft when they went on rampage accusing a businessman of bewitching their children and casting them with an unknown disease.

The Zambian police was in the news again this time round warning to arrest persons who wear mini-skirt and skinny jeans.

The news of some UN investigators going missing made a lot of headlines in the Democratic Republic of Congo. After several searches, their bodies were found. Investigations have been ongoing to understand why they were murdered and those responsible in order to sanction perpetrators.

A Senegalese TV channel also blamed ‘Satan’, the religious villain after it aired a porn film live mistakenly.

After fleeing the country into exile in Equatorial Guinea, Yahya Jammeh wasn’t seen for months only to pop up in a farm.

Some good news for Ghana as the country’s female doctor became the first black female neurosurgery resident at the John Hopkins university. She was celebrated across the world.

Nigeria’s President, Buhari for greater part of the first quarter of 2017 left his country for London for medical check-up and after series of public outcry he returned home to resume work.

APRIL
For the last month for this first part series we begin with Anthony Joshua of Nigeria but now a British citizen. He fought in a famous bout with Vladimir Klitschko and won.

How about giving birth in abundance? Well a Ugandan woman aged 37 gave birth to 38 children over a period of time which was very amazing for many.

Zambia’s opposition leader, Hichilema also had his own struggles in 2017 with the country’s President after he was arrested and put on trial for attempting to overthrow the government.

The King of Swaziland decreed that divorce was illegal in his country. He banned divorce saying it was a sacred union that must be kept.
