The army commander who led the military takeover in Zimbabwe forcing Robert Mugabe to resign last month has now been named the deputy president of the ruling Zanu-PF party.
Saturday’s announcement now paves the way for him to assume the position of deputy president of Zimbabwe.
Constantino Chiwenga retired from the army this month with speculations rife that he could take up the post of deputy president which has been vacant since Emmerson Mnangagwa became president.
Mnangagwa since taking over the presidency has named several top military officers in his cabinet with his critics saying there would be no change in how the country was governed under Robert Mugabe.
Kembo Mohadi a former state security minister under the former president, Mugabe has also been appointed as the second deputy Zanu-PF leader.
Former general Sibusiso Moyo, another person who was instrumental in the military takeover was named foreign minister and former air force chief Perence Shiri also named minister of agriculture and land affairs.
The military takeover executed by the military was seen as an act meant to react to the sacking of Mnangagwa as deputy president under Mugabe after he clashed with former first lady, Grace Mugabe who was also aspiring to take over from her husband.
Mr Chiwenga once was Mr Mugabe’s right-hand man and was reported to have treated him respectfully during the military takeover and subsequent negotiation for his exit from power.
