Another attempt to stop the December 26 presidential run-off poll in Liberia has failed after the country’s Supreme Court dismissed a request by the governing Unity Party to halt the election.

The run-off is between former football star George Weah and current Vice-President Joseph Boakai.

An initial court action to stop the run-off and request fresh poll was rejected by the Supreme after saying it did not find any evidence of fraud in the poll as was claimed by the some political parties.

The ruling party was part of the earlier petition and this time round wanted the court to delay the run-off because it claims the electoral commission failed to implement an earlier order by the court.

The party claims the court ordered the electoral commission to clean up the voters register before the elections.

The Supreme Court has however ruled that the commission did not err in setting the December 26 date for the run-off.

The court however asked the commission to clean up the roll as was earlier ordered and the register of names of voters published at polling stations before next Tuesday’s vote.

Mr Weah beat Mr Boakai in the first round of voting in October but because none of the candidates secured more than 50 percent of votes, a run-off was required.
