The Liberian politician, George Weah has received a major backing from the country’s opposition party, the Liberty Party ahead of the December 26, presidential run-off poll.

The Liberty Party’s leader Charles Brumskine had complained about the conduct of the October 10 presidential election and went further to challenge the credibility of the election at the Supreme Court.

That legal challenge however failed to succeed after the Supreme Court ruled that there was no evidence to proof that the poll was characterized by fraud.

George Weah, the former football star won the first round of voting on October 10 but like his closest rival the incumbent vice president Joseph Boakai, he failed to secure more than 50 percent of the votes.

A run-off between the two candidates would now take place on December 26 to allow Liberians to choose their next president to succeed current leader, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.

Liberty Party Chairman Benjamin Sanvee told the media that George Weah is “the choice of the people.”

“Senator Weah, we endorse your presidency. We endorse your presidency because the people have spoken.” Sanvee added.

The backing of Weah by the Liberty Party is considered significant in aiding the former football star secure the presidency.
