Liberians would now have the opportunity to choose a new president in a runoff poll on December 26 after the country’s National Elections Commission announced a new date.

The Supreme Court of Liberia last week ruled dismissing demands for a fresh presidential election due to claims of fraud in the October poll.

The court said it did not found enough evidence of fraud during the election and therefore cleared the way for a presidential run-off poll.

Political parties of candidates who finished second and third in the presidential election, Incumbent Vice-President Joseph Boakai and veteran opposition leader Charles Brumskine respectively made the appeal to the court.

Liberians will now have to choose between former football star George Weah and Vice-President Joseph Boakai who becomes their next president after both candidates failed to secure over 50 percent of votes in October presidential election.

This would be the first time the country would be witnessing the transfer of power democratically.

Liberia is a country founded by slaves freed by the US in the 19th Century but has been torn apart by war.
