The president of Burundi Pierre Nkurunziza is bidding to rule his country until 2034 by launching a referendum campaign.
AFP reported that President Nkurunziza launched the referendum campaign aimed at adopting a draft constitution to allow him to serve another two seven-year terms starting from 2020.
On Tuesday the leader of Burundi told his supporters that people who oppose his bid would cross what he calls “the red line”.
Critics of Nkurunziza say the planned referendum will plunge the country into civil war.
The government of Burundi has launched a fundraising program for the 2020 elections but this has been condemned by rights groups.
President Nkurunziza refusal to step down after his term ended in 2015 has plunged the country into crisis.
Over 2,000 people have died with several other displaced over the conflict.
