The opposition in Kenya on Sunday announced that it has postponed plans to swear in its leader Raila Odinga as “people’s president” on Tuesday.
The “people’s President” tag is an alternative presidential status according to the opposition in protest to the re-election of Uhuru Kenyatta as president.
NASA said in a statement that it has decided to postpone the swearing-in event after “consultations and engagement with a wide range of national and international interlocutors”.
Raila Odinga last month told his supporters that he will also take the oath of office as “the people’s president”.
He said at a rally in Nairobi that just like President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was sworn in as president, he will also be sworn in as “the people’s president” next Tuesday.
Some of his supporters had accused him of “cowardice” for refusing to go by the Nasa plan in an earlier media report.
But Mr. Odinga said “I am not a coward, I will be sworn as president on Jamhuri Day, I am the legitimate president.”
The decision by the opposition to postpone the swearing in after several warnings from state agencies and international community could now ease the political tension in Kenya.
