24 women caught wearing trousers at a party near the Sudanese capital, Khartoum can now heave a sigh of relief after charges of indecency against them were dropped.
Police in charge of morality had raided a party venue where the women had joined others for a celebration on Wednesday.
The women risk facing punishment of 40 lashes and a fine for wearing “an obscene outfit” had they been convicted.
Thousands of women are occasionally arrested and punished by flogging for indecency each year per Sudanese laws.
The Sudanese law applies to “indecent acts” in public, wearing an “obscene outfit” or “causing an annoyance to public feelings”.
Traditionally, women in Sudan wear loose flowing robes.
