Police in Kenya have confirmed the arrest of a prominent politician from the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) party which took place on Sunday.
David Ndii is considered one of the prominent critics of President Uhuru Kenyatta and had at a point in time called for parts of the country to secede.
Ndii has been arrested for allegedly inciting violence is currently facing interrogation.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga has condemned the arrest and was quoted as saying that Ndii “has committed no crime” and that his arrest was “designed to intimidate and fragment the people of Kenya.”
Reuters quoted the executive director of a pro-democracy group Africa Centre for Open Governance (AfriCOG) in Nairobi, Gladwell Otieno to have said that “Ndii has been at the forefront of articulating the problems with the way the country is run.”
AfriCOG considers his arrest a suppression of freedom of speech.
On Monday Ndii’s wife Judith Mwende Gatabaki told journalists at a news conference her husband was arrested by men from a police unit called “flying squad.”
President Kenyatta was sworn in last week for a second and final five year term after winning the October 26 presidential election which was boycotted by the opposition.
