The Birthday of Robert Mugabe, February 21 has been declared a public holiday in Zimbabwe by the country’s government.
Local media the Herald Newspaper reported that the decision by the government to declare the former President’s birthday an annual public holiday was to honour his contribution to the nation.
An official documentation said Robert Gabriel Mugabe National Youth Day on 21 February was gazetted on Friday effectively making former president Robert Mugabe’s birthday a public holiday.
Former President Robert Mugabe resigned as leader of his country last week paving way for the swearing in of his former ally, Emmerson Mnangagwa last Friday.
Mr. Mnangagwa during his acceptance speech at his inauguration said Mr. Mugabe needed to be accorded the respect and recognition he deserved.
“To me personally, he remains a father, mentor, comrade-in-arms and my leader,” he said. “We thus say thank you to him and trust that our history will grant him his proper place and accord him his deserved stature as one of the founders and leaders of our nation.”
Mr. Mugabe, 93 had been a key political leader in Zimbabwe for 37 years.
