The former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe refused to accept a proposal to go into exile away from his home country and has said he wants to die in Zimbabwe.
The 93 year old is reported to have also accepted a proposal to be granted immunity from prosecution, a major factor in his decision to resign as President.
According to Reuters Mr. Mugabe was concerned about his safety and was willing to resign once his safety in his home country was agreed on as part of a deal that led to exit from power on Tuesday.
Reuters quoted a source close the Zimbabwean government saying that “It was very emotional for” Mugabe “and he was forceful about it…For him it was very important that he be guaranteed security to stay in the country… although that will not stop him from travelling abroad when he wants to do so,” the source said.
There is high level of hope for a better economic transformation in Zimbabwe ahead of the inauguration of Emmerson Mnangagwa as the interim president of the country after Robert Mugabe resigned after staying in power for 37 years.
Zimbabwe’s former vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, returned to Harare on Wednesday to be sworn in as President after fleeing the country to South Africa when he was sacked by Robert Mugabe.
Mnangagwa told a jubilant supporters of Zanu PF on Wednesday that “The people have spoken. The voice of the people is the voice of God,”
“Today we are witnessing the beginning of a new and unfolding democracy,” He added.
