Supporters of the Kenya opposition leader, Raila Odinga on Friday clashed with security officials who prevented them from massing up at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to welcome him back to the country.

Local media reported that at least two people were killed in Nairobi when the police broke up crowds of opposition supporters.

The supporters had gathered to welcome home the main opposition candidate, Raila Odinga, from an overseas trip.

Police were forced to fire tear gas to disperse the opposition supporters who were marching on Mombasa Road ahead to welcome their leader.

Leaders of Odinga’s National Super Alliance (Nasa) mobilised dozens of their supporters to head to the airport to welcome Mr. Odinga who has been on a 10-day visit to the US.

Several vehicles were destroyed, opposition supporters and police officers sustained injuries in the process.

Hundreds of the supporters, including women, destroyed the security cordon placed at ahead of the airport and entered the area to welcome Mr. Odinga who joined a convoy to cheer his supporters on.
