The embattled President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe is reported to be refusing to cede power as he holds back ongoing mediation for an end to the current political crisis.
Reuters is reporting that President Mugabe who remains under house arrest after the military takeover is insisting on finishing his tenure as President.
Mugabe’s demands have brought some level of constraint to the mediation being coordinated by a Catholic priest to allow the 93-year-old exit power gracefully
Reuters quoted a source as saying that “It’s a sort of stand-off, a stalemate,” the source said. “They are insisting the president must finish his term.”
The SABC is reporting that Zimbabwe is likely to have a transitional government with a deal proposed to enable the sacked former vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa nicknamed ‘The Crocodile’ lead the transitional government.
The transitional government would then be constituted of stakeholders from other political parties which could mean the former Vice President, Joyce Mujuru also returning.
Opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai is also reported to be the person proposed to become the country Prime Minister in that transitional government.
The priority of the transitional government will be to restore the economy as the country struggles to improve living conditions of citizens.
Last week President Mugabe sacked his vice president and long-time ally, Emmerson Mnangagwa sparking recent turn of events in the Southern African country which appears to bring a closure to the Mugabe Era.
Robert Mugabe has been leader of Zimbabwe since 1980 after leading his country to gain independence from the British.
