The Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is visiting the southeastern part of the country, also referred to by some as the Biafra region where there have been calls for secession.
Buhari’s spokesman on Monday said the trip will happen this week and would be the first for the 74 year old leader since becoming president.
President Buhari has condemned the continuous demand for secession from campaigners in the region stating that Nigeria has long moved away from such calls hence would not allow for such a demand to materialize.
In a 1967-70 civil war over the Biafra region, several lives were lost with Buhari fighting on the government side as a young soldier.
Buhari’s spokesman, Garba Shehu, said his boss also “be visiting two southeast states of Ebonyi and Anambra.”
Buhari would leave Abuja, on Tuesday for the visit and return on Wednesday.
Nigeria’s government has described the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) pushing for secession a terrorist group with its leader, Nnamdi Kanu facing prosecution being released on bail from detention.
The whereabout of Kanu, charged with treason, is not known to his followers.
“We are yet to know our leader’s whereabouts or that of his parents. (Buhari) is not the type of person any governor should be welcoming to their land,” an IPOB spokesman said in a statement.
