President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe and the leadership of his party, the Zanu PF have been warned against sacking senior figures from the party.
The country’s army has warned to intervene if the purging currently taking place does not stop.
This warning is coming days after Mugabe sacked his vice president and longtime ally, Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Mr. Mnangagwa has fled the country and is reported by local media that he could face further charges.
Zimbabwe’s army chief on Monday however demanded an end to the sacking of key figures within the ruling Zanu-PF party.
General Constantino Chiwenga told a news conference in Harare that “The current purging which is clearly targeting members of the party with a liberation background must stop forthwith.”
“We must remind those behind the current treacherous shenanigans that when it comes to matters of protecting our revolution, the military will not hesitate to step in,” he said.
President Mugabe said he sacked Mnangagwa who “Upon realizing that I wasn’t” going to retire “started to consult traditional healers on when I was going to die. At some point, he was told that he would die first before me.”
Robert Mugabe has been leader of Zimbabwe since 1980 after leading his country to gain independence from the British.
His wife Grace Mugabe is widely reported to be on the verge of being appointed vice president to replace the sacked Mnangagwa.
