The International Criminal Court at The Hague will be launching a probe into all crimes committed against citizens after securing the mandate to do so.
Prosecutors will open a full investigation into alleged crimes against humanity in the country despite leaving the ICC.
On Thursday Judges said there was a basis to investigate murders and torture and all other crimes allegedly committed by government and other groups.
The investigations will be conducted over the period Burundi was a member of the ICC.
Burundi on October 27, 2016 presented its letter of exit from the ICC to then U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
Burundi’s withdrawal was complete last month when it reached the designated one year period hence has become the first country to complete the process of leaving the ICC.
