Journalists in Guinea have staged a street protest in the capital Conakry on Tuesday agitating against what they described as intimidation and bullying by state officials.
The anti-government demo was attended by a cross section of journalists after one of them was arrested for allegedly spreading false news of the death of the country’s president Alpha Condé.
The false reports of President Condé’s death was widely circulated on social media but the government said journalists from a privately-owned Gangan radio station started the rumour.
These journalists were arrested and detained by security forces prompting other journalists to demand their release.
Journalists who went forward demanding the release of their colleagues were beaten by security forces and their equipment destroyed and their radio station taken of the air, according to the BBC.
