One of the policemen stabbed on Wednesday near Tunisia’s parliament house by a militant has died. The stabbing occurred near the country’s major museum, National Bardo Museum in Tunis
The country’s interior ministry said on Thursday that the officer called Commander Riadh Barrouta – died of his injuries less than 24 hours after being stabbed in the neck.
The other police officer stabbed sustained minor injuries on his forehead and is doing well.
A spokesperson for the ministry Yasser Mesbah was quoted as saying on Wednesday that “A Salafist attacked two policemen with a knife. One was struck on the forehead, and the other stabbed in the neck and is in intensive care.”
The attacker, 25 years was arrested by security officials with the suspect claiming to have a hatred for security forces who he considered as “tyrants”.
The ministry in its statement said the suspect believes “Killing them (police officers) is a form of jihad.”
Tunisia in recent times has witnessed series of jihadist attacks which have claimed lives of hundreds soldiers and police officers.
There is currently a state of emergency in Tunisia since November 2015.
