One person has been killed with three others reported to have sustained injuries as violence characterizes ongoing voting in Kenya’s repeat poll.
Local media reported that protesters clashed with police in the western city of Kisumu as opposition supporters attempted stopping Thursday’s elections.
A health official told Reuters that “A young man, aged 17 or 18, was brought in heavily bleeding. We were giving him blood but he succumbed,”
Kenyans are voting in a repeat presidential election boycotted by opposition supporters who have been asked by their leader, Raila Odinga to stay away.
Security is tight around many polling centers to prevent clashes as Mr. Odinga urges his supporters to stage street protest over Thursday’s vote.
The Supreme Court of Kenya ordered fresh election after nullifying the August 8 presidential election results.
That election was won by incumbent, Uhuru Kenyatta but the court said the process of transmitting results was flawed.
Meanwhile the chairman of Kenya’s election commission, Wafula Chebukati has announced that elections in four areas in western Kenya have been postponed until Saturday 28 October.
Those four areas are Migori, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay.
