A Ugandan Member of Parliament has been fined $10 by a court in the capital Kampala for urinating in public. Pictures of Abraham Abiriga’s offence were made public sparking widespread condemnation on social media.
Local media New Vision news reported that the court fined the MP for causing a public nuisance by his action.
The MP was fined 40,000 Ugandan shillings which is equivalent to $10 for an offence he committed on September 25 close to the gate of the country’s ministry of finance.
According to state prosecutors, the MP’s act was against the Kampala Capital City Authority’s maintenance law and order ordinance, 2016.
That law states that such offenders pay a fine of sh40,000 or face a jail term of two months of serve both sentences.
Mr Abiriga had defended his action when confronted by a journalist about the incident.
He has now been set free after paying the fine.
