Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga is urging his supporters to hold series of street protests on Tuesday and Wednesday before Thursday’s repeat presidential poll.
The leader of the opposition Nasa political party is hoping these protests would lead to the cancellation of the impending presidential election.
Mr. Odinga has already announced his decision not to participate in the election due to lack of reforms at the electoral commission of Kenya.
The Supreme Court of Kenya annulled the August 8 election results won by incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta due to irregularities in the transmission of results.
The court ordered fresh election but preparations towards the new election have been characterized by many controversies.
Kenya’s electoral commission chairman Wafula Chebukati last Thursday stated that he doubts that the upcoming October 26 re-run of presidential poll would be credible and fair.
On Wednesday Chebukati said the commission he chairs is sharply divided commission on political party lines resulting in all his proposed reforms being rejected by other commissioners.
Mr Chebukati’s comments follow the resignation of a top election official, from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Wednesday.
Dr. Roselyn Akombe who is also a Commissioner at the commission made the announcement of her recognition in a statement after fleeing the country to New York in the United States of America.
The Kenyan top election official who opposition party leaders asked for his sacking last week announced his decision to embark on leave for three weeks.
The chief executive of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Ezra Chiloba would now be out of the election body before next week’s repeat presidential election.
Mr Odinga, who addressed a series of rallies in Trans Nzoia County on Sunday, maintained that the Nasa coalition will not participate in the October 26 election whose outcome, he said, has already been decided in favour Jubilee Party’s Uhuru Kenyatta, according to the Daily Nation.
“We cannot go to the poll again when things have not been properly rectified. Already the rigging plot is in place. We know that votes have already been printed and have been distributed. We are not fools,” Mr Odinga told a Catholic congregation at a church service at St Peter’s Claver, Kiminini.
