The Kenyan top election official who opposition party leaders asked for his sacking has now announced his decision to embark on leave for three weeks.
The chief executive of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Ezra Chiloba would now be out of the election body before next week’s repeat presidential election.
Ezra Chiloba told Reuters that “This is the first time I‘m taking leave since my son was born. He turns two years (old) in two weeks’ time”.
The opposition leader, Raila Odinga who withdrew from the repeat poll called for protests for staff changes at the electoral commission.
The August 8 election results were annulled by Kenya’s Supreme Court after it determined that officials of the election body didn’t follow due process in organizing the poll. It ordered fresh election which would now take place on October 26.
Kenya’s electoral commission chairman Wafula Chebukati on Thursday stated that he doubts that the upcoming October 26 re-run of presidential poll would be credible and fair.
On Wednesday Chebukati said the commission he chairs is sharply divided commission on political party lines resulting in all his proposed reforms being rejected by other commissioners.
Mr Chebukati’s comments follow the resignation of a top election official, from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Wednesday.
Dr. Roselyn Akombe who is also a Commissioner at the commission made the announcement of her recognition in a statement after fleeing the country to New York in the United States of America.
In her statement ahead of the October 26 re-run presidential poll, Dr Akombe said she had doubts the repeat poll will be credible and fair.
