Police in Uganda on Wednesday clashed with anti-government protesters with police officers firing bullets and teargas into crowds in parts of the country.
The protest which occurred on Wednesday was against the ongoing plans to remove the presidential age limit in the East African country’s constitution, which many consider an attempt to extend the rule of President Yoweri Museveni.
A bill is currently before the Ugandan Parliament to ensure that the age limit of 75 is removed. That means President Museveni who is now 73-years can run for re-election in 2021 elections.
Spokesman for the Ugandan police, Elly Maate is reported to have said that one person died after officers fired bullets in the air to disperse a crowd at a rally he called “illegal” the town of Rukungiri.
But opposition party officials have said two people died during the clash.
If the amendment is successful, it will be the second major change to the constitution of Uganda which has lasted for 20 years.
The previous major change to the constitution was the removal of the term limits in 2005 which prolonged President Museveni’s stay in power.
